Description: Authentic small brass eagle button battlefield artifact from the Battle of Little Bighorn from the renowned Harrisburg collection of Stephen B. Reed, and framed in handsome shadow box display featuring a custom graphic insert. Reed, the longest serving Mayor of Harrisburg, quietly amassed one of the largest "Custer's Last Stand" Little Bighorn collections in his quest to build an Old West-themed tourist attraction. Ultimately, Reed was forced to scrap his plan to build the "National Museum of the Old West" and sell off the contents in order to attempt to recover the nearly $7 million dollars in public funds spent. Display contains one authentic small brass military issue brass button excavated from the Little Bighorn battlefield, in as found condition, indicative of the violent battle which took place there as the exposed troopers had little cover against the overwhelming Indian massacre. The site of intense fighting June 25th and 26th, 1876, “Custer’s Last Stand” as it is commonly referred to, was an armed engagement between the combined forces of the Lakota, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho tribes resulting in the overwhelming defeat of the 7th Cavalry regiment of the United States Army. Accompanied by a full Certificate of Authenticity as provenance for this original battlefield artifact. Condition of the artifact is as shown. Artifact measures appx. 0.6" wide.
