Description: For sale is a quaint and lovely circa 1840 American school portrait of a boy in watercolor. This painting came from a private Connecticut estate. We assume it’s Connecticut or at least New England in origin. If features a portrait of a young boy sitting on an ottoman and footstool. He poses for the artist in a blue dress with blue and white striped socks. He’s quite cute and you can tell the little boy would rather be doing anything else instead of sitting and posing for this painting. The artist does a good job at capturing this quality in the little child. While the work is quaint and charming it doesn’t have the final detail of a highly schooled itinerant painter of the time. But that gives it a great primitive folk art quality. A lovely antique portrait. Condition: As seen in the detailed pictures, the painting has some water staining and discoloration. It has a rip in the margin (not in the image) on the left side(see pic). The watercolor paper was partially attached to paper stock. The painting was most likely reframed sometime in the later 19th century and maintains that original Victorian black walnut picture frame and most likely it’s original matting. There is gilt loss around the oval matting edge as noted in the pictures. At some point someone reattached via watercolor to the matting with a more modern tape.
