Description: Item Description "Will the gentlemen like me?" "Yes. Until they get to know you." Cedric Hardwicke is Captain Francis Barclay - once a highly successful merchant of the high seas who was well on his way to amassing a fortune - until his friend and business partner Andrew MacAllister (Francis L. Sullivan) stole his fortune, sold him into slavery, then took his daughter (Arlene Dahl) and raised her as his own! Captain Barclay, insane with rage, has clawed his way back to freedom and has become captain of the dreaded pirate ship The Black Panther. Barclay is bent on revenge, but MacAllister has built an island fortress for himself which seems impenetrable. While out duck hunting, John Payne has the misfortune to stumble upon Barclay's crew burying some treasure and is captured (after a good fight scene!). Payne is spared from what seems like a certain death sentence by Barclay, who realizes he can use Payne in his quest for revenge. He tasks Payne with impersonating MacAllister's nephew and to infiltrate the island compound - in order to compromise it's defenses from inside! Payne has no choice but to agree, and once inside he is shocked at the barbaric treatment of MacAllister's slaves and sees an opportunity to incite a revolt. He also has a fine time locking horns with the fiery Arlene Dahl who, of course, eventually he falls in love with. The stage is set for an all-out showdown between the former friends Barclay and MacAllister as The Black Panther lies in wait for Payne to complete his mission! Fans of John Payne will be delighted with this picture, as it has all the classic earmarks of Payne's "beefcake" years: He'll be stripped down to his bare chest more than once, he'll suffer vile cruelties, and he'll get into some great fights - including a very good knife fighting duel with Willard Parker! Arlene Dahl has some painfully inauthentic dialog to deliver, but she looks great while doing so. Thankfully she loosens up later in the story and her lines become less formal. Cedric Hardwicke and Francis L. Sullivan make a good pair of villains - Sullivan is so cruel and lacking in any redeeming qualities, you want to see Hardwicke get his revenge. At the same time, Hardwicke is so twisted that we can't help to desire to see him also get his own comeuppance (he would have made a great Ahab). The costumes and scenery are great, and even greater in technicolor, and the final battle scenes are packed full of excitement, fisticuffs, gunplay, and lots of fire!
