Description: Original large-format architectural print: "Design for the New Jail for the District of Columbia." The plan is dated November 4, 1856 and was drawn by Edward Clark, Architect. The image area measures a generous 35 x 52 cm [13¾" x 20½"] on a larger sheet, with generous margins on all sides. It was lithographed by Peter Stephen Duval & Son, Philadelphia and published in a government report to the Third Session of the 34th Congress of the United States, Washington, D.C. When he drew this plan, Edward Clark was the chief assistant to Thomas U. Walter, Architect of the Capitol. Upon Walter's resignation in 1865, Clark himself was appointed Capitol architect by President Andrew Johnson. He held that post until 1902. Condition: This architectural print is in very good condition, bright and clean, with a bold, crisp impression. It was originally issued as a fold-out map but has been stored flat for many years, and we will ship it to you carefully rolled in a sturdy tube. A closed tear at the left and a couple of the old folds have been reinforced on the reverse side with archival tape. There's a faint water stain at the upper left, outside the image area, and the print is blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side.
