Middle View.In pen on the reverse: "No. 2. back of Gisborn dump or nol (not?). Connect on right of nol (not?). Mercur, located in the southern Oquirrh Mountains, became internationally notorious as a gold mining town around the turn of the twentieth century, at which time major technological innovations were made by miners who endeavored to make the unusual ore profitable. The town was destroyed by fire in 1902 and after a dozen years became a ghost town.Matthew T. Gisborn was a familiar mining figure in the west. He was first connected with gold placer operations in California, and then with Virginia City, Nevada. However, during Utah's early mining days, Gisborn became interested in the camp of Dry Canyon near Ophir, his primary holdings there being the Mono mine, at one time one of the most significant in the state.Photographer Charles L. Joy (1869-1943) was active in Utah. Joy's photographic career began in American Fork, Utah, and continued in Salt Lake City. Many of his photographs were taken in association with T. E. Hinshaw. Their firm was located in Salt Lake City. Joy was an important Utah and Western pioneer photographer who is little documented.
