Description: Theatrum mortis humanae tripartitum (The Scene of Human Death), published in 1682, is a moral-didactic work, a kind of "theatre" of talking pictures, with which Valvasor wants to remind the reader of the transience of man and the need for a virtuous Christian life, which alone leads to salvation and eternal happiness. The content is succinctly presented in verse, supplemented with sayings from the Bible and enriched with graphic illustrations. The motif of a reminder of death (memento mori) and a call to a virtuous life is present in the Theater as a thread from the dedication and the opening address to the reader at the beginning of the book to its conclusion. In the spirit of Baroque metaphor, Valvasor compares human life to a theatre stage, on which images of life and death unfold before our eyes to serve as a reflection and a guide. The woodcuts of the second and third parts are based on the original drawings by Janez Koch, while in the first part Andrej Trost was inspired by the woodcuts of the Dance of the Dead in the book Imagines mortis by Arnold Birckmann. The first part, Saltus mortis, presents the Dance of the Dead in fifty-four scenes. The second part of the book, entitled Varia genera mortis, brings together various images of dying: the famous, the unusual, the grotesque, but above all the ghastly and gruesome deaths of historical figures, legendary persons or anonymous characters, presented in pictures and words. The third part of the book, Poenae damnatorum, consists of the torments of the damned, a colourful array of hellish torments suffered by the souls of the damned according to the measure of their sins. The various torments are accompanied by a short dialogue between the devil and the sinner, or simply an epigram, in which the connection between the type of punishment and the sin for which the unfortunate soul atones is most often explained. The text was printed in Ljubljana in 1682 and the copper engravings were printed at Bogenšperk Castle. The book is a cultural, historical and artistic monument that reveals the spiritual image of a time full of hardship. Rare.
