Initially equipped with B-47 Stratojet bombers, the wing trained for strategic bombing missions and nuclear deterrence. In 1959, the wing was transferred to Amarillo Air Force Base, Texas.During the early 1960s, the 461st Bombardment Wing continued its training and readiness missions. With the escalation of the Vietnam War, the wing's focus shifted to supporting combat operations in Southeast Asia. While the B-47 was not used in the Vietnam War, the wing supported the war effort through strategic deterrence and support missions.In 1965, the 461st Bombardment Wing began phasing out its B-47 aircraft as the Air Force transitioned to newer bomber platforms. The 461st Bombardment Wing was inactivated on February 25, 1966, at Amarillo Air Force Base, Texas.
