Description: The atlatl was a spear thrower that predated the bow and arrow by about 1200 years. The atlatl point and arrowhead both were intended for use on projectiles, that is they were intended to fly through the air. This meant they could not be excessively large or heavy, in fact most arrowheads were under 1.5 inches in length. Some structural characteristics can help distinguish one from the other. No arrowheads were ever fluted, no atlatl points were stemmed or notched. Proper triangles were arrowheads made in imitation of European trade points, whereas triangular shapes with rounded sides were more likely unfluted atlatl points. 1.52 inch obsidian atlatl point and 1.35 inch Colorado flint arrowhead.
