To learn more about us please click on our profile Of very high quality round miniature portrait of a young aristocratic lady, wearing blue dress and dove grey sash, her lightly powdered hait partially upswept and dresses with a double strand of pearls. She holds a violet in her left hand and rests her right arm upon a grassy stone. The lady is depicted seating within a classical landscape with a ruin of a temple behind, which resembles the famous "Temple of Vesta", the Roman temple in Tivoli near Rome. It is a very important work of well-known French portrait miniaturist of the last quarter of 18th century - Augustin Dubourg. Thanks to research of Dr. Bernd Pappe (world-known specialist in portrait miniatures) published in the article "Augustin Dubourg, Augustin fils/neveu et Joseph-Ange Augustin: trois artistes d'une même famille dans l'ombre de leur célèbre parent" (see our last additional image with clips from this article) the biography of Augustin Dubourg is as follows: Augustin Dubourg (real name - Georges Nicolas Touissant Augustin) was born in 1758 in Saint Dié by Vosgues as first son of Nicolas Augustin and Marie-Françoise Guillaume and as elder brother (not as cousin like it was thought originally) of born one year later Jean-Baptiste-Jacques Augustin, who became a famous French miniaturist later. In order of not being taken for his younger brother he assumed the name Augustin Dubourg (du bourg means: from the suburbs; in this case from the suburbs of Saint Dié). Quite often his works were misattributed to his famous brother.Augustin Dubourg exhibited at the Artistes Libres in the Rue de Clery in Paris in 1791. He also participated in the Salon Exhibitions of 1793, 1798 and 1800. Dubourg died in ca. 1800 (L. Bedouret says the artist supposingly committed a suicide by jumping off the Notre Dame).
