Description: Ashley Scott Ladies Wool Coat, True Vintage-Unique Tailoring- late 30's/early 40s In my Item Condition description above, The one owner of this coat is my great Aunt Katie who was born March 1908 and lived to the age of 92. The 8th picture was taken when she was 18 or 19 years old. She purchased this coat in the late 30's or early 1940's at Insleys Women's Store on Main St., Downtown, Johnstown PA. I have been looking on and off for one like it for 3 years, I can't find it anywhere else. This is referred to as a Swagger coat or a Reefer coat in the few articles and searches for coats from this period. I found a few similarities within the same age range, but what makes it a standout are the shoulder pleat that I could not find any among the similar coats currently seen in selling platforms, which kind of makes it a one of a kind on the web, but I did find a few with the pleats in the lapels and the pocket flap style. The sleeves are dolmen style which give it a feminine puffy sleeve look common in during the 30's and early 40's. My best guess as to it's size is perhaps a 1X since it fits my body well enough when fully buttoned, but I have a wide shoulder span so it is not comfortable on me and I would probably rip a seam if I raised my arms or while sitting when steering a car. This coat is a wonderful example of high quality construction through once commonly used details that are rare today. For example I could find no open seams on the outside or anywhere on the lining, where it usually occurs; see the pictures I took with the coat turned fully inside out. In the 17th picture, it shows the triangular notches to distribute ease along curves and seams and to match the stitching to layers of fabric. In that same picture there is also cording made of rolled cotton cloth sewed along the seam for added strength. The 18th picture shows the sturdy twisted threads that holds the liner in place to prevent it creeping up when seated. The only part of this coat that did not stand the wear of time was the foam shoulder padding seen in the photo. Below are the measurements from the actual coat in which I always measure on a flat surface with a seamstress tape. I included a comparison chart Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE found at https://purplekittyyarns.com/vintage-body-measurements-size-chart and two Sewing Patterns Size charts for 1939 and1948 in the last two pictures, from https://timelesstemplates.blog/vintage-sizing-charts/ It may seem like a lot to read in a description, but I added these for people who really want this coat to help determine it's fit, rather than my approximation since it would be a shame to purchase it and not be able to enjoy it. *Remember too, that we usually have bulky clothing underneath and should go at least one size up. I do not take returns for clothing that does not fit or becomes damaged by trying it on and damaging it ...which explains the hours, days and weeks adding up to months of research for an item full of history like this prewar WWII coat.
