Description: A beautiful set of Sun Colored Amethyst (SCA) antique GLASS DOOR KNOBS still mounted in functioning framework. This is an ORIGINAL ANTIQUE set of knobs, dating well over 100 years old, over ONE CENTURY OLD. Each glass knob has a beautiful translucent purple - amethyst - lavender tint to the glass. Condition: These glass knobs are in very good condition with just some age wear including scuffs, scrapes, shallow chipping, scratches, light wear but nothing significantly wrong, NO cracks, chips, dings, damage, etc. The brass / metal workings likewise have age wear, tarnish and scratching, but work like clockwork. You don't often see these older 'donut' shaped knobs and I am sure they are way obsolete and long out of use but that's the point and why they are invaluable as a functioning set of antique door knobs. What is ESPECIALLY nice about the ones here, and what makes them antique and set apart from all others is the light amethyst color. You hear about old glass turning purple? This is from the manganese in the glass, a mineral that was pulverized and added to vats of liquid glass that acted as a decolorizing agent to turn the glass crystal clear. Exposure to ultraviolet rays of the sun or other sources of UV rays, triggers a chemical reaction and the manganese oxidizes and turns a wonderful amethyst color, as you see here. The longer it is in the sun, the darker purple - lavender - amethyst color it will become. But here's the kicker; with few exceptions, only clear glass from before 1915 will turn sun-colored-amethyst. Not only does this amethyst hue make these great looking antique door knobs, but it also authenticates them as being truly antique.
