Description: Dimensions Height: 12.75in (32.5cm)Width: 15in (38cm) Important map of Fujian Province, showing the east coast of China and the west coast of Taiwan. With a quite elaborately pictorial cartouche featuring a rococo chinoiserie ornamentation. The map shows for the Manchu Qing, only the western half of Formosa, which was considered part of the Province of Fujian. It is not that the map maker was unaware of the shape of the eastern part of the island: rather it shows that that part was considered the area of the wild "uncooked" savages. The longitude makes Beijing the Prime Meridian. Featuring a rococo chinoiserie ornamentation.Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d' Anville (1697-1782) was a French cartographer and compiled over 200 maps. This map is from his most important work Nouvel Atlas de la Chine, published in Paris in 1735.
