Description: This exquisite hand-carved statue of Garuda Vishnu is a true antique gem. Crafted in Indonesia (Balinese) with intricate attention to detail, this statue is a perfect addition to any collection of Buddhist art. This amazing sculpture is handcrafted from ONE solid piece of wood. You can see on the bottom how the artist began with a large tree stump or big branch. You can also see in the photos that there is a split in the base, most-likely due to the mid-20th century age of this, and wood tends to stretch and expand over time and when placed in humid conditions. It does not take much away from this statue, as these are pretty rare with the Garuda Vishnu, very common in Buddhism, and considering how intricately-carved the details are, this took a very long time to make. This is a good example of Mythology and the gods the Buddhists pray to. The carvings are pretty insane! The complete deliberation of each carved area is so evident in its craftsmanship. Fine detailing like carved and cut out circular "beehive"-like pieces are near the base. The carved parts on his wings, ears, hat and clothing is remarkable, like a wooden tapestry! His bulging, round eyes and sharp teeth are fantastic, as well. There are so many fine aspects in respect to the hand-carving on this ... the clawed, reptilian feet, the serpent peeking out through his cloak between his feet, the dangly pieces hanging from his earlobes, his position with his bent knees ... it's all so accurate and some of the finest wood-carving I've ever seen. He has a cloak or a cape that fits (loosely) into a cut out on his backside. The cape alone is pretty spectacular with the wavy, vertically-cut details. The wood of the cape is a bit lighter than the Garuda Vishnu, as it was probably added later and from a different tree and wood. But it paid very well together. There are four detachable claws that can be removed and put back into the slots on his hands. The base is to die for! I tried to include many photos, so you can appreciate and understand what I'm talking about. Yes, there is a crack in the wood on the base, but it's on the side, so when this is presented as an art piece or prayer statue, you cannot see it unless you turn it around. There is also a crack on his upper, left chest, but it's pretty insignificant (only an inch or so) considering this sculpture. Finally, although I did not realize this until I did some research, it looks like he had a pair of detachable wings, because there are two slots in the back near where his cape is placed. Over time, and since the wings were removable, I guess they got lost over the years. Unless they have some spiritual meaning, I know this beautiful statue can stand alone without them, and nobody would realize otherwise. Overall, considering the age and quality, this is a pretty amazing statue. I believe the issues add character and show the age. Measuring 26 " height (in total with the attached cape), 10.25" length, and 7.25" width, it is a pretty substantial in weight and it's such a striking piece that will surely catch the eye of any visitor. The statue is handmade and features exquisite detailing that showcase the rich heritage of Indonesian and Balinese art. Made from high-quality wood, it is a durable piece that will stand the test of time. This statue is perfect for those who appreciate the beauty and elegance of Buddhist art and are looking for a unique piece to add to their collection. Thanks for looking! Have a great day! 😁
