Description: 1925 Authentic Hielscher Copper Plate PhotogravureThe Alhambra at Dusk before the Sierra Nevada Mountains, GranadaSatisfaction GuaranteedThis is an authentic 1925 print--NOT a recent reproduction This hand-printed copper plate photogravure print features a sunset view of the Alhambra from the west, with the Sierra Nevada mountain range forming a backdrop beneath the sky. Check my store for additional views of and from within the Alhambra, as well as other photogravures of this beautiful area in Granada. This photogravure is after a photograph by the distinguished Kurt Hielscher (1881-1948), a German teacher-turned-architectural-photographer of the early 20th century who toured large parts of Europe, documenting the continent in photographs. This hand-printed photogravure is from his 1925-printed and published collection, Das Unbekannte Spanien (The Unknown Spain). On holiday in Spain during the summer of 1914 when World War I broke out, Hielscher was prevented from returning to West Prussia. Select photographs taken during this extended stay (1914-1919) eventually became part of this travel photo book, and represent work considered masterful in its use of light to create compelling compositions from everyday scenery.Of his published photography, Hielscher once wrote, "I try to show the primal face of a country and its people in my books. As a witness to a sinking world, my pictures will still speak when I have long fallen silent myself."If requested at the time of purchase (please message me prior to initial shipping), I will be happy to include a peel-off, laser-printed facsimile of the copyright information as it appears in the collection from which this photogravure was removed. Purchasers who frame their prints frequently affix the copyright statement to the back of the frame. Printed on medium-weight paper, the overall sheet size is 9.25" x 12", and the printed portion (including the caption text under the image) is 7.25" x 8 3/8" (the printed image shown in the scan below, text excluded, is 5.75" x 8 3/8"), with margins of 1" to 2" all the way around to allow easy matting and framing. There may be text or another image on the reverse of this print. The print is a true hand-printed, copper plate photogravure print, with the distinctive saturated shadows and depth. It is a very attractive work, and exceptionally well-printed by hand.I've matted and framed several of these, and they look very nice. Please check my store for other botanical, natural history, or historical art prints perfect for framing or incorporating into other projects. A Note on the Photogravure Process: This process was developed to provide an archivally permanent way of reproducing a photographic image. Because of its high quality and richness, photogravure was used for both original fine art prints and for photo-reproduction of works from other media such as paintings. Photogravure uses a flat copper plate, etched rather deeply, and printed by hand. Photogravure registers an extraordinary variety of tones, through the transfer of etching ink from an etched copperplate to special dampened paper run through an etching press. The unique tonal range comes from photogravure's variable depth of etch; that is, the shadows are etched many times deeper than the highlights. Unlike half-tone processes which merely vary the size of dots, the actual quantity and depth of ink wells are varied in a photogravure plate and are often blended into a smooth tone by the printing process. Each photogravure print's appearance is truly unique. Please note that photogravures are a bit difficult to scan. The depth and warmth of the product is considerably more apparent in the actual print than can be seen in the scan. Please refer to additional photos for close-up views captured by camera.Below is a cropped view of the sheet--without full margins, and without the caption text, "Alhambra-Abendstimmung: im Hintergrund die Sierra Nevada (Alhambra - in the background the Sierra Nevada)," which is printed in English, Spanish, German, French, and Italian. The image is a fairly accurate representation of the print. Below: A close-up of the surface of one print from this series, to show the characteristic depth and honeycomb texture indicative of a true copper plate photogravure. Below: A close-up of the surface of this print, showing part of the image, caption text, and the spacious margins below. Condition: Excellent. As shown, with no tears or marks. There may be spots of discoloration related to the aging process of the paper, especially in the margins of the sheet. This is a genuine 1925 copper plate photogravure print--NOT a recent reproduction. It is nearly 100 years old; please handle with care.Satisfaction Guaranteed or RETURN for any reason for a prompt refund.Comes from a smoke-free home.
