Description: a hard to find children's book, from 1888.it features little biographies about the earliest European explorers, with the usual Victorian, Christian morals clumsily woven into the stories.Features, among others, de Gama, Vespuci, de Soto, Cabot, Drake, Raleigh, The Roanoke settlers and other pilgrims, and, of course, Columbus.all stories paint the explorers as purehearted heroes that selflessly brought glorious civilization to heathens, and wealth and honor to their monarchs.this is also the only old book i've ever read that actually propagates that myth that Columbus wanted to prove that the earth was round and everyone thought he was crazy...i was starting to think the myth itself was a myth, but nope, here it is.plus, there's this amazing side story wherein he bravely risks his life to save his crew from a terrible lizard, and its literally just a friggin iguana. an iguana! and even in the illustration, where they tried to make a 3 foot long herbivorous reptile as big and ferocious looking as possible, the iguana just looks confused and disappointed in him, and i love it. there's quite a few other illustrations too, with something on about every other page. CONDITION: fair.some wear to spine and boards.textblock cracked in a few places.pages yellowed, with occasional slight foxing.occasional pencil marks from a child, throughout.several previous owners' names and info written on first pages.see pics. SPECS.about 8.5 x 7 x .5".96 pages. check out my ebay store for more old and rare books from my personal collection.
