Undated, these 10 Shilling notes were issued with just four signature combinations from 1939 until 1952. This is the second combination and carries the signatures of Hugh Traill Armitage and Stuart Gordon McFarlane in black ink and these were issued in 1942 during the war. From May 4th to 8th of this year, 1942, the “Battle of the Coral Sea” was fought and won. It was the first significant sea battle between the United States with its Australian allies and the “Empire of Japan” after Pearl Harbor. It was also the first sea battle in history where the opposing fleets never saw, or fired on each other. It established the “Aircraft Carrier” as the primary weapon in war.
