Undated, these 10 Shilling notes were issued with just four signature combinations from 1939 until 1952. This is the first or earliest combination and carries the signatures of Hugh Joseph Sheehan and Stuart Gordon McFarlane in red ink and these were issued in 1939 at the beginning of the war. In 1939 Australia: On January 13, devastating fires, known as the “Black Friday bushfires” swept through Victoria, killing 70 people and burning 20,000 square kilometers of land. On April 7, Prime Minister Joseph Lyons died of a sudden heart attack, making him the first Australian Prime Minister to die in office. On September 3, Australia declared war on Germany, marking the beginning of Australia’s involvement in World War II and On December 1, Australia agreed to take in 15,000 Jewish refugees fleeing Europe.
