1929 Signed David Davidson Hand Colored Photograph Original Frame Garden Gate

Description: This listing is for an antique SIGNED David Davidson photograph in its original frame. This beautiful image is of a garden and the white gate for the space is centered. Flowering trees and bushes frame the work. A lattice fence extends right and left. Davidson was a well-known commercial photographer from Providence, RI. Davidson was born in 1881 in Providence and died in 1967. Wallace Nutting was a mentor of Davidson and was his assistant from 1901-1904. According to a 2012 article on the National Endowment for the Humanities website, “Hand-painted photographs were, of course, an alternative to color photography before the latter was widely available. But it was also an era when photography was still a new and contested medium, not yet considered art. Hand-tinting the photographs made them look more like watercolor paintings and less like mechanically reproducible prints. Nationally recognized, Davidson won a bronze medal in the category of hand-painted photography at the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco.” The article noted that Davidson was second only to Wallace Nutting for producing and selling hand-colored photographs.The horizontal work is in a gold-tone wood frame that is decorated in the middle of the molding with a hand-painted decoration. See photos. There are chips to the gold paint on the front and on the left side and lower edge of the frame. Please see photos. The back paper bears a paper tag from the framer that reads, “Framed by. 519 W. Trudgeon Ave, Henryetta, Okla. Frame: ONN. Glass:______. Total: $5.00. THANK YOU. Brown Printery. 12-31-29 – Lot 19.”The photograph is signed, “David Davidson” in the lower right corner. The piece was hand-colored using moody colors – pinks, taupes, greens, and browns. The image size from the front measures 13 1/4” wide by 10 1/4” tall. The size of the overall framed piece measures 15 1/4” wide by 11 7/8” tall. Clear stand not included.
