Description: At present (04/22/24) there are no other copies of the American first edition currently for sale at any of the major used and rare book websites. Only a handful of copies found in the auction records of the last several decades. Unique “association” between the author Alfred Mahan, the former owner [Thomas J. Ryan], the US Naval Academy, and of course the subject of the book. Blue clothbound covers with superficial wear and spotting. Bumped corners. Lower rear board edge bumped, with short tear to the cloth. Light fraying and short nicks to the top and bottom of the spine. An approximately 2 inch repair has been made to the groove near the bottom of the rear cloth-covered hinge, (without discernible effect on the solidity of the hinge), which has been covered with a narrow strip of some kind of smooth adhesive. See photo of the rear cover. Binding square, strong and tight. No writing or marking on the pages except for the former owner’s name on the front free endpaper and some few tiny random spots of unknown origin here and there in the book. There are a few little nicks to page edges - none significant enough to need repair. Page 57/58 has a chip on the long edge. Page 369/370 is creased. Maps and plans of naval battles are complete. Please examine photos closely if interested, and feel free to ask a question. Though the book is an original and unrestored American 1st edition of a classic work on naval/military/world history, and remains very solidly bound, it’s tempting to consider having it bound into a fine new binding of some kind, befitting it’s uniqueness. That will be a decision for the next owner to consider. The book will be very carefully and protectively packed, and an adult recipient at the eBay registered address will need to sign for the book at delivery. 30 days to return for any reason, and a full refund promptly given, once it has been determined the book remains in the same condition as when shipped. Thanks for your interest.
