Description: Yosemite Falls 1871 This is a single sheet only which is over 150 years old. It was published as the front page of the Dec. 23, 1871 issue of The Illustrated Christian Weekly. It measures 11 x 16 inches in size. It has a slight crease across the center and a minor bit of age toning, but is still in excellent and attractive condition (see photos). It presents a lovely wood-engraved view of Yosemite Falls, which was based on a photograph by Carleton Watkins, a pioneering San Francisco photographer. It would make a great display piece. The piece will be accompanied by a separate sheet from the same issue, with an article on The Yosemite Falls. This article runs for 16 column inches of text, and describes both the Falls and other scenic wonders of Yosemite Valley. It mentions six other falls, as well as the Merced River, Cathedral Rocks, El Capitan, and Half Dome, etc. It begins by saying, It was September when we sat by the Merced river, in full view of the Yosemite (Yo-sem-i-te) falls, half a mile distant. . . and notes near the end that, Yosemite was formerly the home of Indians, of whom but a few remain, and these gain a livelihood by furnishing fish and venison to the two or three white families of the valley. (Compared to the leading pictorial journals of the day, Harper's Weekly and Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, The Illustrated Christian Weekly had a small circulation, so prints from this publication are much rarer than ones from its legendary competitors.)
