Historical comments: .The Battle of Pea Ridge (or Elkhorn Tavern), March 1862: Most of the early action in the war occurred in the Western Theatre. Early 1862, Union forces under the command of General Samuel Curtis pushed the Confederates southwest through Missouri and into northern Arkansas. Major General Earl Van Dorn launched a Confederate counterattack to stop the advance. In his haste to engage, he sent his supply train far to the rear. Curtis was able to hold the Union line on the first day of battle and on the second, he forced the Confederates from the battlefield when Van Dorn could not re-supply his troops with ammunition. Although not considered a major battle, it was fiercely fought on both sides and was one of the bloodiest battles west of the Mississippi. It was important because strategically it allowed the North to control the border state of Missouri and northern Arkansas for the rest of the war.
