Description: This is a rare and valuable 1850 First Edition, first issue of David Copperfield by Charles Dickens. The book is a hardcover published by Bradbury & Evans in London. Illustrated with 40 full-page engraved plates. This early first edition contains the following first issue points: 1850 engraved into vignette title-page; chapter XXVII listed on page 283 in the contents but appearing on page 282 in the text; uncorrected "cha pter" on page 19; "viii" in preface with last "i" not aligned; uncorrected "coroboration" on page 387; "recal" on pages 16 and 225, and "screwed" for "screamed" on page 132. The spine features gilt titling on red leather with black behind the title text, and 5 raised bands. Edges and spine show some wear. Marbled boards. Some marks by previous owner(s) on inside front cover, endpaper, and the first blank page (which reads, in pencil, “1850 First Edition, 40 full page engraved plates bound from parts.”). All engravings are all present and intact. Frontispiece and the facing illustration show heavy foxing. Plates throughout the text show light to moderate foxing. Pages show browning toward the edges. A bit of foxing on a small number of pages. Text pages are largely very clean. This is a really great copy of this rare first edition David Copperfield. It would be a great addition to any book collection. And, it looks beautiful on a shelf!
