Description: Very Rare Type 1849 California $5 Game Counter 2 Known? This one is NOT a variety, but a rare major type that every California gaming token collector needs to complete this series. It is known as the long chin type, having a chin like that of Jay Leno. It was a popular portrait type with the 1830s Hard Times Tokens. The reverse die is also unique with deeply cut date, and having a small "9" in 1849. Fuld lists this type as his Cal-3A. Fauver lists it as #410 and #415. In addition, our piece is struck on a much thicker flan than normal (see photo). Likely struck as a presentation piece. The only other 'thick flan' specimen that I am aware of is from the John J. Ford Jr. Collection, Oct 16, 2007, where it was described as, "1849 California Counter. $5 size. Brass. Reeded edge. Uncirculated. 22.6 mm. 71.3 gns. Liberty head left, date below/miner panning for gold, date below. Struck on a thick flan. Spot on obverse." That piece brought $862.50 in 2007. Our piece is sharp as a tack with glossy iredescent toning in person (does not show well in the photos). Minor field roughness noted. There is a die-break on reverse rim from about 3-4 o'clock position (refer to Fuld description). This is a super nice find for someone who specializes in California gaming tokens.
