It was commissioned by King Kamehameha III and minted privately in the United States because the country didn't have the resources to mint it itself. The coin features the profile of King Kamehameha III on the obverse and a laurel wreath on the reverse. The words "Ka Moi" ("the King") appear on the obverse, and "Aupuni Hawaii" ("Kingdom of Hawaii") appears along the edge of the reverse. The words "Hapa Haneri" ("one penny") appear in the center of the reverse.
