1844 O US Half Dime VG Details (180* Error + RARE Key Date) Bent

Description: This Half Dime is struck in medal fashion instead of coin fashion. The obverse and reverse instead of being 180* apart are struck with the same die rotation! It is called a 180* error or medal strike. Rarity and Survival Estimates Survival Grades Estimate All Grades 300 60 or Better 15 65 or Better 1 The Survival Estimate represents an average of one or more experts' opinions as to how many examples survive of a particular coin in three categories: 1) all grades, 2) 60 or better, and 3) 65 or better. These estimates are based on a variety of sources, including population reports, auction appearances, and personal knowledge. Survival estimates include coins that are raw, certified by PCGS, and certified by other grading services. Ron Guth: The 1844-O Half Dime has the third lowest mintage of any date/mintmark combination of Half Dimes in the 1840's. It is difficult to locate an 1844-O Half Dime in any grade, but especially so in Mint State. The few examples that are known in Uncirculated condition are most often found in 62. The finest example is a single PCGS 65, which is unusual because virtually every other date has examples in 66 to 68. Many examples show weakness on the high points, often on the leaves of the wreath on the reverse. A weak strike is typical of most coins that came out of tne New Orleans mint, but the Half Dimes, because they are struck with a small die, are usually struck better than larger denominations.
