Description: This is a March 21,1826 signed letter from at the time time Pennsylvania State Representative JOHN ROBERTS to at the time Pennsylvania WILLIAM M. MEREDITH ESQ. "JOHN ROBERTS" (1771-1885)"Congressman, Politician, Senator, Collector of PortPennsylvania House Representative, Senator and U.S. Representative "WILLIAM M. MEREDITH (1799-1873)American lawyer in Philadelphia, politician, U. S. Secretary of the Treasury under President Zachary Taylor,Pennsylvania State Attorney General "MARK RODES"MAYBE: the Mark Rodes who was a master builder elected to The Carpenters Company in 1785 and served in John Jordan's Company in the Artillery Artificers. The letter is one sheet of paper approximately 14 1/2" X 9" folded in half to 7 1/4" X 9". The sheet has been folded for mailing, has wax seal and is post stamped on the back. To the best of my ability the letter reads: William M Meredith Esq. Philad: 21 March 1826 SirI take the liberty to address you on behalf of an old revolutionary soldier (Mark Rodes) who is making application for a tract of donation land. The committee in claims sometime in this session made an unfavorable (?) on account of the want of some further evidence which he procured and forwarded to Mr. Lohman who I believe placed them in the hands of Mr. Middleworth. I have written by the part to Mr. L. requesting his attention to them and may I now ask the favor of your using your influence for the veteran who in the down hill of life finds himself by commercial misfortunes plunged from a state of affluence to that of comparative (?) (?) (?) they favor it will not be on an unworthy object and (?) (?) it will be sensibly felt by. Please see pictures as part of description as it is the actual item being offered.
