Description: 17th Century Original Dutch Landscape Etching by ANTHONIE WATERLOO (1609-1690) Two cows on a ferry. A river landscape with cows and a boatman at lower left, with a castle, trees and other buildings on the opposite bank. One of a series of 12 (unnumbered) landscapes. This one is designated as Hollstein 26. The British Museum chooses a wide date range for the print - 1640 to 1690. Signed/inscribed with "f" in the plate, top left corner. CONDITION: Very good. A good impression, evenly inked, with excellent tonal contrast and exquisite detail as we expect from Anthonie Waterloo's compositions. Very slight abrasion at top right corner caused by laying down, but minor. A few abrasions in the blank areas just beyond the image line. Trimmed to thread margins and on to/into the image line at the top edge. Printed on "laid" paper, nicely age-toned, laid down to a support sheet of card and further attached to a mount. Old collector's pencil notes visible below the image, with a reference to Dutuit's second state of two. Please use the zoom facility. DIMENSIONS: 95 x 145 millimetres REFERENCES: Harvard Art Museum is the best online resource for the second state - item R1030 British Museum: Does not have the second state - but out of interest for the first state (which has more definition to the sky area) see Sheepshanks 1606. * Under very high magnification of the sky area, and allowing for wear in the plate, you can just about make out where some of the first state lines originally were - I try to show it in my photos. LITERATURE:F.W.H.Hollstein "Dutch and Flemish..." 26 ii//ii Adam Bartsch, "Le Peintre-Graveur" II, 35.26 Eugene Dutuit, "L'Amateur Manuel d,Estampes..." 26.ii PROVENANCE: On the backing sheet we have an old pencil reference to Dutuit's 2nd state and to a Craddock & Barnard catalogue late 1970s with a price of £20.00. I have no reason to doubt this. Makes sense. Readers of a certain vintage will have fond memories of Craddock & Barnard catalogues and their shop in Museum Street, London - a Mecca and an Aladdin's Cave for Old Master print collectors in the pre-internet age, a friendly place and sorely missed. They sold over 600 items to the British Museum, just across the street.
